Is a sleeper train a saving if one of us expects to be awake all night?

Travel category photographTravel

Imogen turns the laptop towards Max. “Two train journeys and a hotel in one. That's our answer.”

They are comparing ways to travel from Vienna to Zurich. In their illustrative budget, two berths on an overnight option come to €240; daytime tickets plus another hotel night come to €330. The sleeper option they are considering involves sharing a compartment with other passengers. They still need to check the exact accommodation and terms.

Max likes trains but expects to find a shared sleeping space difficult. Imogen has pencilled in a walking tour soon after arrival because she sees the overnight journey as a saved day. He sees a possible night awake followed by being expected to enjoy a city at full speed.

He could accept a quiet arrival day. She would rather spend their limited Zurich time out, and a private compartment may exceed their budget. How would you compare these options when the €90 difference is clear but the quality of the next day is not?

The walking tour is doing hidden work in Imogen's calculation. If the overnight journey comes with a low-pressure arrival day, Max may feel differently about it. They can compare two complete itineraries rather than a cheap ticket against a costly ticket while assuming the same energy on arrival.

Max does not have to prove he would sleep badly. His concern is enough to factor into a trip they are buying together. Imogen also does not have to agree that a bad night is certain. They can decide what they would do if he arrives tired instead of arguing about an outcome neither knows.
