I was deferred from giving blood. How do I explain that to our office team?

Health category photographHealth

The office donation chart has a blank beside my name. I went with the group, but the donor team said my haemoglobin result was below its donation cutoff and gave me advice before sending me home.

Back at work, a colleague said, "You could try the session near the station instead." I had already been told to wait before another donation. I do not want to treat a different location as a way around that instruction.

[NHS Blood and Transplant explains that its haemoglobin check is used to decide whether someone can donate, with advice given when the result is too low](https://www.blood.co.uk/the-donation-process/donation-advice-and-information/haemoglobin-and-iron/). I am following up on the advice I received, rather than choosing iron tablets to complete the chart.

I had enjoyed being part of the team outing. Now I am deciding whether to ask for the blank to be removed or explain publicly why I could not donate. How much explanation does a voluntary office challenge deserve?

The blank has turned a private eligibility decision into an apparent failure to join in. That is a problem with the chart's meaning, not something your medical information needs to repair.

"I attended, but I wasn't eligible to donate that day. I'm following the donor team's advice." That is a complete explanation if you want to give one. You need not publish a result to make the attendance count.
