I used the photo my friend asked me to leave out of her birthday slideshow

Confessions category photographConfessions

She'd pointed at the picture while we were sorting photos: 'Please don't use that one. I hate it.'

I used it anyway. It was from a camping trip, her hair sticking up and a spoon halfway to her mouth. I thought it captured the funny version of our friendship better than another posed photograph. At the birthday dinner, people laughed and she smiled for the screen. Later she asked why I'd included it after she'd said no.

I said she looked cute. She said that wasn't the question.

She's right, but I still catch myself thinking she took a harmless joke too seriously. The slideshow only went to the people at dinner; I haven't shared the file. How do I apologize without adding another argument about whether the picture was objectively embarrassing?

'You looked cute' answers whether you liked the photo. Her question was why you ignored her request. An apology can stay with that: you heard the limit, decided your preferred joke mattered more, and included it. You don't need to settle the photograph's quality to acknowledge that choice.
