How do I share a comfort film when my friends keep mocking it?

Entertainment category photographEntertainment

Ten minutes into the film, my friend started doing the lead actor's voice over the dialogue. Someone else joined in. I laughed once, then realised I hadn't heard the next scene.

We'd agreed to take turns bringing a film from our teenage years. Mine was a sentimental adventure I used to watch at sleepovers. I said it wasn't a masterpiece, and apparently that sounded like an invitation to spend the whole screening making fun of it.

I don't need them to love it. I do want to see it rather than listen to a new commentary track. When I asked for a quieter bit, my friend said the teasing was the fun of watching old favourites together.

Was I unclear about the sort of evening I wanted? I'd like to keep the film rotation, but not feel as though choosing something dear to me means volunteering it for a roast.

Admitting a film isn't a masterpiece didn't necessarily invite people to talk over it. 'You can dislike it, but I want to hear the scenes' is a reasonable distinction. Save the impressions for afterward if you still want that part of the evening.
