How do I ask my friend to lower her phone during a concert song?

Entertainment category photographEntertainment

My friend's phone was above her head when the song I'd waited for began. I could see the singer on her screen, but not past her elbow.

She had said she wanted one clip for her sister, who couldn't come. I thought that meant a chorus. She recorded the whole song, turning to include me halfway through. I ducked out of the frame and missed the bit I most wanted to watch.

Between songs, I asked her to hold it lower. She said I could move a little and that watching it together afterward would be a nice memory. I didn't want a replay to become the way I saw the performance in the first place.

I'm happy for her to keep a short clip. How do I explain what her filming cost me without making a small request sound like a lecture about how everyone should experience live music?

Start with the elbow and your view. 'Your arm blocked the singer for that song; please keep the phone below my sightline.' It's a specific request about where she's holding it, not a verdict on people who like recording concerts.

You both left 'one clip' undefined. Before another show, discuss whether that means a few seconds or a whole song, and say you don't want to be pulled into the video while you're watching. She shouldn't have to guess those preferences from your ducking away.
