How do I offer a rent repayment plan when next month's income is still uncertain?

Housing category photographHousing

The message I'd drafted said, "I'll clear the balance next Friday." Then payroll told me they couldn't confirm when the missing shift payments would arrive. I deleted the date and stared at the empty sentence.

I'm renting privately in England. This month's rent is £1,200, and I can currently pay £700 while covering the basic expenses in my working budget. I told the landlord about the £500 shortfall before the due date. He wants a clear plan rather than updates about payroll, which I understand. I don't yet know whether next month's wages will include the missing money or only the usual amount.

My brother has offered a loan, but he would need it back next month. That could move the same shortfall into a family conversation. [Citizens Advice's arrears guidance](https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money/rent-arrears/dealing-with-rent-arrears/) recommends an affordable repayment plan and getting advice if needed; it doesn't promise that a landlord will accept one.

What should a useful proposal say when I can state what I have now but cannot honestly promise the date for the rest? I want to respond promptly without giving him a reassuring schedule that collapses at the first payment.

Separate the £700 you have from the £500 you hope payroll will supply. Explain the shortfall, state what payment you can make now and propose a date for the next update. An update date isn't a repayment date; labelling it accurately helps the landlord understand what is confirmed.

The brother's loan has its own deadline. Compare the next month's whole budget before treating it as a solution. If repayment would make the next rent impossible, you would be choosing who hears about the shortfall rather than resolving it.
