How do I correct a neighbourhood warning after learning the 'stranger' lives here?

Neighbours category photographNeighbours

I posted, “Does anyone recognise this man trying the entrance? Please be careful.” By the time I learned he was our new upstairs neighbour, six people had replied.

He had moved in that morning. His key wasn't turning easily, and he had walked away to call the letting agent. I saw him pull the handle twice through my window and filled in the rest. I hadn't spoken to him.

The group admin deleted my message when I explained. My neighbour then showed me a screenshot on his phone: somebody had already forwarded it to another street group. He said, “I was introduced as a warning before I was introduced as a person.”

I apologised privately. He thanked me for saying it but asked me to correct the places where the warning had gone. I don't know all those places. Posting his name and flat number would prove he belongs here, but it would also share more information he hasn't agreed to share.

What should the correction say? I want it to be clear enough to undo my accusation, without making him responsible for supplying personal details to reassure the people I alarmed.

A correction can identify your own message without identifying his flat: “My earlier warning was wrong. The person was a new resident having trouble with his key, and I made an assumption without speaking to him.” That gives recipients the essential change.
