Can I ask movers to release the only lift during my neighbour's booked moving slot?

Neighbours category photographNeighbours

“We've only got the lift booked until one,” the mover said. I was downstairs on crutches, watching him keep the doors open while another person wrapped a chest of drawers.

It was 12:10. My neighbour had reserved a two-hour moving slot with the building manager. The manager's email said other residents should expect delays; it didn't say whether the lift would be unavailable for the whole slot. I had expected to wait for a furniture trip, not for wrapping to happen beside an open lift.

I asked if they could let it come down once so I could get home. My neighbour said each interruption cost time, and the van was due at another job. I believe her. She had boxes stacked around her and looked close to tears.

I cannot manage our stairs with my current mobility. I also don't want to make her moving day harder by treating a reservation as meaningless. We stood there talking about the booking while I still had no way upstairs.

What would be a fair request in that moment? For future moves, I want the manager to explain how a reserved slot and essential resident access are meant to work together.

A specific request is easier to act on than a debate about the entire booking: let this resident make one trip home, then resume loading. The mover can explain any immediate handling constraint rather than treating the next fifty minutes as one uninterrupted journey.

The manager's “expect delays” email left both sides guessing. Your neighbour had reserved time and you expected continued access. The manager needs to settle that operational gap, not leave two residents arguing beside a lift.
