How can I tell whether I want to change degrees or just escape a module I'm struggling with?

Education category photographEducation

Dad looked at the transfer form and said, "You loved engineering until the equations got hard." That stung partly because last week I spent an hour staring at a differential-equations problem and then spent the next hour looking at industrial-design courses.

I'm finishing my first year of engineering. I still enjoy the circuits lab, especially finding out why something I built doesn't work. I dread most of the maths homework. The design course appeals to me because I imagine making things, but a student I spoke to showed me a project with weeks of research and several rounds of criticism before the final model. I haven't done that kind of work either.

My adviser gave me a provisional estimate that transferring could add a semester. We haven't mapped the modules yet. Dad is covering my fees on the understanding that I finish the degree we agreed to fund; he hasn't said he would pay for the extra time. I could delay the decision for a term, but that could also affect which classes I can enter.

I have an open studio visit next week and a maths-help appointment before that. What should I try to find out at each, so I can explain a transfer as more than running from one difficult subject? I don't want to stay only to prove Dad wrong, either.

Enjoying fault-finding in the circuits lab is a reason to examine engineering more closely before writing off the whole degree. At the maths appointment, show where you stop being able to proceed and ask what the next modules require. A difficult first year might still fit your interests; it might also reveal work you don't want more of.
