Does a prepaid car-hire voucher settle which card we need at collection?

Travel category photographTravel

“It's paid. Why would they care whose card we bring?” Callum asks. He has reserved a car for a week in Sicily through a broker using his debit card. The lead driver is his partner, Aisha. Her only credit card is staying at home because she wanted to carry less.

The example booking shows a €900 security deposit in the collection conditions. Callum has read the voucher's “paid in full” line, but neither has checked which cards the actual rental firm accepts for that deposit. Aisha could bring her card if they resolve this before departure; she does not want to discover a problem after landing.

[ECC-Net warns that many rental firms require a credit card in the driver's name](https://www.eccnet.eu/news/largest-number-car-rental-cases-3-years-0). That is a reason to check this firm's terms, not a universal statement that every debit card will be refused. [Your Europe also distinguishes the broker from the company providing the car](https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/driving-abroad/car-rental-abroad/index_en.htm).

What should they confirm with the rental firm before travelling? Aisha is happy to bring a required card, but wants Callum to do the checking rather than hand her the voucher and call the job finished.

The unanswered question is about collection, not whether the broker received money. Send the rental firm the booking reference and ask which card type, cardholder name and available amount this particular deposit requires. Keep its written reply with the voucher. “Paid in full” is not the information they are missing.

Aisha should check the position on her own account privately once the firm specifies the requirement. The example €900 is not the same as spending €900 on sightseeing. They need to know how the proposed security arrangement works and what access to funds it may affect, rather than assume the voucher explains it.
