Do I need a 5K deadline, or can I start with twelve-minute walks?

Health category photographHealth

"Pay the $38 now. If you wait until you feel ready, you'll never do it," my friend said, holding the registration page open.

The charity 5K is eight weeks away. She wants us to train at six on Saturdays, when my partner sleeps after a night shift and I look after our daughter. After a year of mostly sitting at work, what I can reliably offer is twelve minutes of walking at lunch.

She calls that a nice break rather than a plan. A race deadline helped her, and she wants company. [WHO says all physical activity counts, including walking](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/physical-activity), but that does not tell me whether I will be ready for this race.

I want to make a commitment I can keep. At the moment, the easiest way to end the conversation is to pay for one I may not be able to keep.

Twelve minutes that actually exists in your day is a workable starting commitment to discuss. You could invite her to one lunch walk and decide separately about the race. Being her exercise companion does not require accepting her Saturday timetable.

The health value of movement and readiness for a 5K are different questions. [WHO includes walking and says some physical activity is better than none](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/physical-activity). That supports starting; it does not certify a training schedule or turn eight weeks into a promise.
