Did laughing at the porch duck make me a member of its costume committee?
FunnyMy neighbour sent a picture of her ceramic porch duck wearing a tiny raincoat. I replied, 'Excellent. Finally, someone dressed for the forecast.'
That apparently put me on the Duck Council. Six neighbours are now in a group chat discussing his wardrobe. His name is Gerald. I voted for a wizard hat once and spent a pleasant lunch break making a paper tie. It's a lovely, ridiculous thing in a street where we mostly used to nod at each other.
This week, our neighbour sent a list assigning each household a month. Mine says 'November: outfit, photograph, caption'. Then came a message asking each household for $8 towards fabric. She has been buying the miniature buttons herself and says she can't keep doing all the work. I can see her point.
I don't particularly want to buy duck materials or own a month of Gerald's content calendar. I only joined the chat to enjoy the pictures. When someone asked whether the rota was optional, another neighbour replied, 'Gerald is disappointed in your civic spirit.' Everyone added laughing faces. Nobody answered the question.
Can I stay friendly and enjoy Gerald while declining the committee job, or is watching the joke without helping an unfair bargain?
