AITA for watching a match on my laptop during the no-phone evening I suggested?

AITA category photographAITA

"That's still a screen," my boyfriend said when I opened my laptop at the kitchen table.

I'd suggested we put our phones in a drawer until nine. We'd been spending dinner scrolling, and I wanted a quieter evening together. He agreed and left his phone there. After dinner he started reading a novel while I cleared the table.

There was a match I wanted to follow. I opened the laptop, put the stream on quietly and watched the last twenty minutes. When he objected, I said we'd agreed on no phones, not no laptops. I also pointed out that he was reading instead of talking to me.

He closed his book and said, "You asked me to stop checking the score, then checked it yourself on a bigger thing."

He was right about the earlier exchange. Before dinner, he'd asked if he could look at the score once, and I'd said the whole point was to have a break from it.

I still think a planned twenty minutes is different from repeatedly picking up a phone. But I hadn't mentioned the match when proposing the evening, and I kept watching while we argued. He took his phone out of the drawer before nine. Now he doesn't want to try it again. AITA?

The laptop clause sounds like a defense you found after making the choice. You'd already used the purpose of the evening to deny his one score check. Applying only the literal word 'phone' when you wanted the match was an uneven standard.

A novel can absorb someone too, so his reading wasn't automatically the shared conversation you pictured. But that didn't make the match an agreed exception. You could have asked whether he wanted twenty minutes of separate activities rather than treating his book as permission.

Continuing to watch while discussing whether watching was fair probably made the argument feel decided before he could answer. The useful apology is for setting a restriction you didn't follow in spirit, not for failing to foresee every possible device.
