AITA for refusing to carry messages between my mother and sister after I passed one along badly?

AITA category photographAITA

"Mum says you should come to dinner and apologize," I told my sister.

What Mum had actually said was, "Tell her she's always welcome for dinner." I added the apology because they'd argued the previous weekend and I thought that was what Mum was waiting for.

My sister replied that she wasn't attending a meal with an apology as the entry fee. I passed that answer back to Mum, who said she hadn't set any such condition. By then both of them were asking me to explain what the other really meant.

I admitted that I'd added the apology. Then I told them I wouldn't relay any more messages and they needed to speak directly.

My sister says that would be a reasonable decision after helping straighten out the misunderstanding I created. Mum wants me to call her and repeat the exact invitation. I said I'd already told her there wasn't an apology condition, and I didn't want to keep becoming the middle person.

I've often carried messages because neither likes making the first call after an argument. I resent the role, but this time the message got worse because of my own interpretation. AITA for stopping now instead of arranging one more conversation?

You're entitled to stop being the regular messenger, but this particular misunderstanding didn't originate between them. You added a condition. Correcting that clearly is a smaller task than accepting responsibility for all their future communication.
