AITA for moving seats after my friend kept answering for me at dinner with her family?
AITA"Let me finish," I said when my friend Carla answered her grandmother's question before I could.
I've been learning Spanish for two years. Carla invited me to dinner with her family and said her grandmother, who speaks very little English, would enjoy talking to me. I told Carla I'd be slow and would need help with some words.
At dinner, her grandmother asked what I liked about my new apartment. I started answering. When I paused, Carla supplied an answer about the kitchen. I had been trying to describe the balcony. It happened twice more: she explained my job while I was looking for a word, then answered a question about my brother before I got started.
After the second interruption, I said quietly, "Can you wait unless I ask for help?" She nodded. When she jumped in again, I said in English, "Can I finish one sentence without you rescuing me?" Her parents and brother understood. Her grandmother looked between us and asked what was wrong.
Carla said we were discussing my language practice. I picked up my plate and swapped seats with her brother, who had offered to help me find the word for balcony. The rest of dinner was pleasant enough, but Carla was quiet.
Later she said her grandmother had asked whether Carla had upset me, and that moving seats made a point in front of everyone. Carla thought the long pauses were uncomfortable and was trying to keep the conversation going.
I had asked for a chance to answer. I also used an irritated tone in a language her grandmother couldn't follow, then changed the seating without explaining it to her. AITA for moving?
