A supplier sent me a thank-you gift just before I help choose next year’s supplier
Career / WorkThe parcel contained a weekend bag and a note: “Thanks for being so easy to work with this year.”
I coordinate orders for a small exhibition company. The bag came from a supplier I speak to most weeks. I’m not the person who signs the next agreement, but my manager will ask what it’s been like working with them.
I accepted the parcel at reception before knowing what was inside. I haven’t taken it home. There’s a gift policy somewhere in our shared documents, though I haven’t found the current version yet. A colleague said suppliers send things all the time and that I’d make it awkward by returning this one.
The note might be simple appreciation. The timing still makes me uncomfortable.
Would you tell the manager first, contact the supplier, or look for the policy before doing either? How do I handle a gift I’ve already received without treating the sender as though I know their motive?
