Would you buy the charming house if every load of laundry required going outside?
HousingWe found a small house that gets nearly everything right. It is on a quiet street, the rooms have good proportions, and the backyard has a mature tree that makes the kitchen feel private. The price leaves enough room for normal repairs instead of using every dollar we have.
The laundry is in the detached garage.
The garage sits about thirty feet behind the house. The path is paved but uncovered. To wash clothes, we would carry a basket through the kitchen, down three steps, across the yard and through a side door. On a pleasant Saturday, this seems almost quaint. On a rainy Tuesday night with wet towels, it seems like a housing choice we would discuss forever.
The current owners use a lidded cart and keep detergent in the garage. They said the arrangement never bothered them. They also said they do laundry once a week. We do several smaller loads because of work clothes, gym clothes and a dog who considers clean blankets a personal challenge.
There may be ways to bring laundry into the house, but we are not treating that as a simple future promise. We would need qualified advice about space, utilities, ventilation, cost and whatever approvals apply. The only interior location we can imagine would take half the pantry. So the honest decision is whether we can live with the garage setup as it exists.
My partner thinks the inconvenience is predictable and manageable. He points out that the garage offers room for drying racks, supplies and sorting. I think predictable inconvenience is exactly what becomes resentment: not one dramatic problem, but hundreds of small trips carrying socks through weather.
We are going back at the time we normally do laundry, bringing an empty basket and walking the full route without pretending it is a tour. We will also map where dirty clothes collect and where clean clothes would be folded.
Would this be a harmless routine, a firm dealbreaker, or something whose importance depends entirely on climate and household habits? Which repeated housing task deserves more weight than buyers usually give it?
