The sump pump at the house showing was running through an extension cord

Housing category photographHousing

During the basement showing, the sump pump started and a green extension cord twitched beside the pit.

The pump plug ran across the floor to an outlet near the stairs. The seller’s disclosure says the pump is included and has operated during heavy rain. It does not explain whether the cord is temporary or part of the usual setup.

We did not unplug, move or test anything. Our inspector photographed the visible arrangement and recommended evaluation of the electrical supply and pump installation by the appropriate qualified professionals.

We asked the seller when the cord was introduced, whether a dedicated outlet or backup system exists, and what records are available. Any repair request will depend on the actual inspection findings and purchase terms rather than a diagnosis from the showing.

My partner noticed that the basement was dry. I noticed the bright green line doing part of the work. Both observations belong in the decision.

The pump completed its cycle and went quiet. The cord remained stretched across the concrete like an underline beneath the basement.

Treat the dry basement as evidence that water management exists, not evidence that every part of the current setup is appropriate.

Do maintenance records show whether the extension cord was added for a temporary outage or has become the normal supply? The timeline matters.
