The folding chair opened halfway while I was carrying it and recruited my coat

Funny/WTF category photographFunny/WTF

I brought a folding chair to an outdoor concert because the event instructions recommended one.

The chair was a simple metal model with a padded seat. Folded flat, it looked cooperative. I carried it under one arm with my coat draped over the top.

Halfway from the parking lot, the chair began to open.

One pair of legs dropped toward the sidewalk. The seat moved away from my body. My coat slipped into the hinge and became part of the mechanism.

I stopped walking, but the crowd around me continued. People flowed past while I held a chair in the early stages of becoming furniture.

I tried to close it. The coat tightened in the hinge.

I tried to open it fully. One leg caught on my jeans.

For several seconds, I was wearing the chair diagonally.

A volunteer pointed toward the entrance and said, “Bag check is that way.”

I said, “This isn’t a bag,” which was true but did not address the larger visual.

Another attendee stopped and held the loose chair leg while I pulled my coat free. We discovered a small locking bar under the seat. It had not clicked into the folded position, so every step encouraged the chair to reconsider its form.

The attendee pushed the bar until it locked. The chair became flat again.

“Now it knows what it is,” she said.

At the concert, I opened it carefully and sat down. When the event ended, I folded it, checked the bar twice and carried my coat separately. The walk back was completely uneventful, which felt like an advanced demonstration.

Folding furniture occupies a difficult category: too large to carry like luggage and too mobile to trust without inspection. The failure is rarely dramatic enough to justify help, but it can slowly attach itself to clothing until strangers become necessary.

What should you check before carrying a folding chair through a crowd? Is there a universal lock position, or does every chair hide its own small piece of hardware in a different location?

Before walking, fold the chair completely and confirm any latch, clip or locking bar is engaged. Carry loose clothing separately from hinges.

A simple carrying strap can control a chair that lacks a positive lock, provided the strap does not interfere with the opening mechanism.
