Our rental’s checkout list appeared after arrival, and it reads like a second job
TravelThe house was clean when we arrived, the beds were made, and the weekend has been mostly good. Then someone opened the digital guest guide and found the checkout list.
Strip every bed. Start two loads of laundry. Wash and put away all dishes. Wipe the counters. Take trash and recycling to different collection points. Return patio furniture to the storage room. Set the thermostat to a specified temperature. Send a message after the final walkthrough.
Checkout is at 10 a.m.
Some of this is ordinary courtesy. We were never going to leave food on the counters or bags of trash indoors. The part bothering us is the combination of a cleaning charge and a list long enough that our final morning now has assignments.
One friend says we should do everything because arguing could risk a dispute. Another wants to photograph the house, complete only basic tidying, and ask the platform which instructions are actually part of the booking. A third has started the laundry already, which has made the disagreement feel theoretical while she does the work.
The original listing and confirmation need to be checked exactly. We should not assume the digital guide has the same contractual status everywhere, and any platform or property rules require current verification. I am less interested in declaring the host wrong than in preventing the most conscientious person from cleaning while everyone else debates principle.
We have one evening left. If we challenge the list now, the host may clarify it. If we wait until morning, we will be cleaning under a clock. If we simply comply, the trip ends with eight adults searching for laundry pods in a house that charged for cleaning.
What is the sensible sequence? Compare the checkout list with the booked terms, ask the host which tasks are essential, document the condition, and divide whatever remains? Would you refuse tasks that were not disclosed before booking, or complete them first and raise the issue afterward?
