My roommate says my late-night gaming is loud even though I wear headphones
GamingI work a second shift and usually get home around 11:30 p.m. Gaming for an hour is how I stop feeling as if I walked directly from work into bed. I wear closed headphones, keep the game audio low, and assumed I was being a considerate roommate.
Last week, my roommate asked whether I could stop playing after midnight because I keep waking him. I was confused until he imitated me: quick bursts of keyboard tapping, the desk chair rolling, and occasional sentences spoken much louder than I realized. Apparently my headphones have solved the one part of the problem he could not hear.
Our bedrooms share a wall. My desk sits against it because that is where the outlet and network connection are. The floor is hard, the chair has plastic wheels, and the mechanical keyboard sounds normal to me because it is directly under my hands. To him, the whole setup may be transmitting through the building like a small construction project.
I asked which sound is worst. He said it changes: sometimes the chair, sometimes a low thump from the desk, sometimes my voice. That answer is fair but difficult to fix. I could move the desk to the opposite wall, though the room layout would become awkward. I could use a rug, softer keyboard mat, and stationary chair feet. I can also stop voice chat after midnight, which may be the most effective and least enjoyable change.
He has not demanded silence. He gets up at 6:30 and wants the apartment quiet enough to sleep. I want one part of the day that belongs to me. Both needs seem reasonable, which is why I would rather diagnose the sound than turn this into a referendum on whether adults are allowed hobbies at night.
What should we test first? I am thinking one ten-minute session while he listens from his room: typing, chair movement, desk contact, then voice at my normal level. We could rank the sounds and fix the top two. Is that too elaborate, or exactly what prevents us from buying random foam and still resenting each other?
