My roommate finishes laundry but leaves the machines occupied until the next day

Housing category photographHousing

My roommate does laundry in a way that technically completes every load and somehow keeps both machines unavailable for twelve hours.

She starts the washer after dinner, moves the clothes to the dryer before bed and leaves them there until the next afternoon. Sometimes a second clean load remains in a basket on top of the washer. The laundry closet is narrow, so using either machine means moving her clothes somewhere else.

I hate touching other people's laundry. She hates when anyone puts clean clothes on the sofa because the dog sits there. This leaves me standing in front of a finished dryer as if it is a locked room.

The first few times, I waited. Then I texted. She would answer, “I’ll grab it,” and do so hours later. Last week I needed clean work clothes, so I placed her dry load in her basket and started mine. She was upset because several shirts wrinkled and one item ended up beneath the basket where the floor was dusty.

She says a finished load is not an emergency and that shared machines require patience. I agree that nobody should hover with a stopwatch. I also think the machine stops being shared if one person's storage time is longer than everyone else's wash time.

I proposed a simple rule: after a cycle ends, the owner gets a thirty-minute grace period when awake. After that, dry clothes go into the person's clean basket and wet clothes stay in the washer unless the owner explicitly approves moving them. Each of us keeps an empty labeled basket beside the machines. Overnight loads must be collected by a set morning time.

She says formal timing will make the apartment feel hostile. I think the hostility is already present; it is simply folded inside a dryer.

What rule protects access without encouraging people to handle wet laundry carelessly? Is the empty-basket system reasonable, or should the person waiting always ask before moving anything?

The labeled clean basket solves the main handling problem. Everyone knows where dry clothes go, and nobody has to choose between the floor and surrendering the machine.
