My neighbor’s wind chimes are gentle in daylight and relentless at 2 a.m. Is it reasonable to ask for nighttime removal?
NeighboursDuring the day, the wind chimes next door sound pleasant.
At two in the morning, the same four notes feel like they are inside my bedroom.
The chimes hang from the corner of my neighbor’s covered porch, about fifteen feet from our side window. On calm nights I barely notice them. When the wind rises, they ring in irregular bursts: three quick notes, silence, then a longer clatter just as I begin to fall asleep again.
The neighbor installed them last month. She told me they belonged to her mother, who died several years ago. She likes hearing them while gardening because they remind her of home. That history matters to me. I am not asking her to throw them away or pretend they are ordinary decoration.
I have tried closing the window, using a fan and moving my pillow to the other end of the bed. Closing the window helps but makes the room stuffy. The fan covers soft ringing, not the stronger gusts. Last week I slept in the guest room during a stormy night.
I have not yet mentioned the problem. I worry that “your memorial keeps me awake” will make her feel that I am asking her to choose between grief and my comfort. The actual request is smaller: bring the chimes inside at night, secure the clapper during windy weather or hang them farther from our bedroom.
She may not hear them the way I do. Her bedroom is on the opposite side of the house. From her porch, the sound spreads into open air; from my window, it seems to bounce off the wall.
My partner thinks a nighttime request is obviously reasonable. I agree in theory. In practice, remembering to bring chimes in every evening creates a daily task for someone else. A simple tie or hook might be easier, but I do not know what would preserve the item without damaging it.
I plan to speak during the day and begin with the windier nights rather than claim the sound is constant. Would you ask for quiet every night after a set time, only when strong wind is expected, or first test a different location together? How do I acknowledge the meaning of an object without making its impact untouchable?
