I raised my freelance rate by $10 and still paid a $35 late fee before the first invoice cleared

Money category photographMoney

In June, I raised my freelance rate from $50 to $60 an hour. My first project at the new rate took twelve hours, so I sent a $720 invoice and felt as though the decision had already improved my month by $120.

The contract said payment was due 45 days after invoice approval. I had focused on the rate and barely noticed the timing.

The client approved the invoice on June 18. Payment arrived August 2. My July rent was due before then, and I was $140 short after an unrelated car expense. I paid rent two days late and was charged $35 under my lease.

The higher rate was real. So was the gap between earning it and being able to spend it. The client did not violate the agreed schedule, and the $35 did not become their fee. I absorbed it because I had planned July around money scheduled for August.

For the next project, I kept the $60 rate and asked whether a smaller client would agree to fourteen-day terms. I also stopped counting an approved invoice as cash in checking. Whether a client accepts different terms depends on the relationship and contract; I do not assume the request will always work.

The August payment covered the late fee many times over. It did not make the July notice feel any less red when it was taped to my door.
