I built a soft-serve cone taller than my judgment could support

Funny/WTF category photographFunny/WTF

The frozen-yogurt shop charged by weight and allowed customers to operate the soft-serve machines themselves.

I chose vanilla and pulled the handle.

The yogurt came out slowly at first. I rotated the cup and built a neat base. Then the machine accelerated.

I kept rotating.

The swirl rose above the rim. It looked impressive, so I continued for one more circle. That circle leaned left. I tried correcting by adding yogurt to the right.

This is not how structural engineering works.

The tower became taller, heavier and more divided in its loyalties. I released the handle. A final ribbon of yogurt continued after the decision, landing across the top like a loose cable.

I held the cup perfectly still.

The tower moved anyway.

It bent slowly toward my wrist. I tilted the cup in the opposite direction, which caused the base to slide. A child at the next machine said, “It’s going down.”

He was correct.

The top half folded over the side and landed on my hand. I moved toward the napkin station carrying the cup underneath a white frozen arch. Every step made it sag farther.

An employee brought a larger bowl and suggested placing the entire cup inside it. We lowered the structure together. The tower collapsed into the bowl with the quiet finality of a snowbank leaving a roof.

I thanked her and asked whether this happened often.

She said, “Mostly when people fix the lean by making it taller.”

The child nearby nodded. My failure had become a lesson for younger engineers.

At the toppings bar, I added exactly one strawberry because the bowl had already experienced enough ambition. The yogurt tasted fine. It simply no longer had a shape associated with retail photography.

What is the reliable self-serve technique: build a wide base, keep the cup close to the nozzle and stop before the swirl rises above the rim? And why does the machine always deliver one final ribbon after the handle is released?
