I agreed to a four-state road trip before learning nobody else plans to drive
The group chat made the road trip sound communal. Four friends, four states, a playlist everyone could add to, and a rental SUV big enough that nobody would have to hold a backpack on their knees.
Last night we had our first real planning call. I asked who wanted the first driving shift. One friend said highways make her anxious. Another said she has not driven anything larger than a compact car. The third said he can drive “if absolutely necessary,” then mentioned that his license renewal is still somewhere in the mail.
That leaves me.
I like driving, but I do not like the version of a road trip where one person watches the road while everyone else rates gas-station snacks. Our current outline has long travel days on both ends and two shorter drives in the middle. On the map, it still looks possible. In my body, it already feels like work.
Nobody tricked me. We simply used “we're driving” as if the car would operate by group enthusiasm. I also contributed to the problem by volunteering to handle the rental because I am comfortable with the booking details. Competence quietly became assignment.
I told them I need us to redesign the trip if I am the only confirmed driver. The immediate response was practical but revealing: we could add a night, drop one stop, or take turns keeping me supplied with coffee and conversation. The first two reduce driving. The third decorates it.
There are current rental terms, license requirements, and authorized-driver rules that must be checked directly before anyone drives. I am not asking how to improvise around those. I am asking what a fair trip looks like when the labor cannot be divided evenly.
Do I set a hard daily driving limit and let the route shrink around it? Ask everyone to absorb more of the cost because I am absorbing the wheel time? Cancel the road-trip shape entirely and choose a place we can reach another way? I still want to travel with these people. I just do not want to arrive home feeling like I transported them.
