AITA for stopping my partner from announcing our engagement at my graduation dinner?
AITAI finished a master’s program while working full-time. It took three years, several abandoned weekends, and more instant noodles than I want to remember. My parents planned a dinner after the ceremony with my sister, two close friends, and my partner, Jonah.
The week before graduation, Jonah proposed at home. It was private and lovely. We agreed to tell our families in person rather than posting anything immediately.
I assumed that meant separate conversations. Jonah assumed the graduation dinner was the perfect moment because everyone important would already be together.
On the way to the restaurant, he showed me a small bottle of sparkling wine in his bag and said he wanted to make a toast after dessert. I asked what he planned to say. He smiled and tapped the ring box in his pocket.
I told him no.
He thought I was nervous about attention. I said I wanted one dinner where the congratulations were about finishing school. If we announced the engagement, every conversation, photo, and future memory of the night would merge into wedding talk.
Jonah said there was enough happiness for both things. He had also invited his parents to join us for dessert without telling me. They were already driving to the restaurant.
I became angry and told him he had to cancel. He called his father from the car and said there had been a misunderstanding. His parents turned around halfway there.
At dinner Jonah was warm to everyone, but quiet. When my mother asked why I was not wearing the ring she had briefly seen on a video call, I lied and said it was being resized. Jonah looked down at his plate.
We announced the engagement the next afternoon at my parents’ house, then visited his parents. His mother congratulated us but said she felt foolish for getting dressed, buying flowers, and driving forty minutes only to be sent home. She thinks I could have protected the graduation focus while still letting them come for a toast.
Jonah apologized for inviting them without checking. He also says I treated our engagement like an intrusion and made him humiliate his parents rather than adjust my picture of a perfect night.
I am thrilled to marry him. I just did not want three years of work to become the opening act for a surprise he arranged one week earlier. Yet I can see that once his parents were on the road, stopping them caused a separate hurt that cannot be explained by wanting the dinner to have one theme.
AITA for insisting he cancel the announcement?
