AITA for refusing to return a handmade blanket after the friendship ended?

AITA category photographAITA

Three years ago, my friend Ava made me a blanket from old concert shirts we had collected together. Some shirts were mine, some were hers, and two came from shows we attended with a larger group.

She gave it to me on my birthday. I have used it ever since.

Our friendship ended this spring after a long argument about money and canceled plans. Last week Ava asked for the blanket back. She said making it had taken months, and looking at photos of it in my apartment felt like watching our shared history belong to someone who no longer wanted her.

I said gifts do not reverse when relationships do.

Ava offered to replace the shirts that were originally mine and pay for shipping. She does not want money. She wants the object she sewed while our friendship still felt permanent.

I refused again and removed a recent apartment photo that showed the blanket from my public account.

Mutual friends say I am correct about ownership but unusually cold about the meaning. One friend pointed out that I rarely use it now because seeing it makes me angry.

That is true. The blanket is folded in a closet. Giving it back would probably bring Ava more comfort than keeping it brings me.

But I also feel that returning it would let her rewrite the friendship as work she did for herself. It was given to me because I mattered. I do not want the ending to cancel that fact.

I may be preserving proof rather than a blanket.

The blanket was a real gift, and Ava cannot demand it as though ownership never transferred. That does not decide whether keeping it still serves you.

You admit it stays in a closet and mainly proves that you once mattered. Returning it could honor what the friendship was without agreeing with how it ended.
