A bag of oranges escaped across the grocery store parking lot
Funny/WTFI made it through the grocery store with a sensible list, a reasonable total and no impulse purchase larger than a bag of cinnamon cereal. The failure began after checkout.
I had chosen paper bags because I was carrying everything a short distance. One bag held canned tomatoes, pasta and a net bag of oranges. It looked sturdy. It had handles. It was lying.
Halfway across the parking lot, the bottom opened.
The cans dropped straight down. The pasta stayed near my feet. The oranges treated gravity as a starting suggestion and traveled in six separate directions.
One rolled under an SUV. Two headed toward the cart return. Another crossed the painted line into the next lane with the calm purpose of someone leaving a bad meeting.
I put the surviving bag down and began collecting them. This created a new problem: every time I bent over, the grocery receipt in my pocket tried to escape. A man returning his cart stopped one orange with his shoe. A woman near the SUV crouched to retrieve another. For ten seconds, the parking lot operated as an emergency citrus response team.
I thanked everyone while holding three oranges against my chest. The man handed me his orange and said, “Fast little guys.”
There is no dignified container for loose groceries after their bag has resigned. I tried using the torn bag like a tray. One side folded. I moved everything into the remaining bag, which now held the weight and emotional burden of two bags.
It stretched low enough to make a second collapse feel inevitable.
I carried it from underneath with both arms, walking toward my car like I had won a very practical prize. The cinnamon cereal sat on top, completely unharmed and contributing nothing.
At home, I discovered I had recovered only five oranges. The sixth had either reached freedom or joined another family.
Do you chase every rolling item in a parking lot, or is there a distance where the food legally becomes part of the landscape? And what is the best emergency move when a bag fails but the car is still twenty yards away?
