Someone mistook my labelled lunch for the office's shared food. How do I fix the fridge arrangement?

Food category photographFood

My name was on the lunch box, but the box was empty when I opened it. A colleague said she'd thought it was part of the food marked "help yourself". The sign was taped above the whole fridge shelf; the actual shared snacks occupied only one corner.

I was annoyed and asked why she'd ignored the name. She apologised and offered to buy me lunch. I accepted, but we still need a clearer arrangement because more people will be using that kitchen next month.

Would you ask for a separate shared-food tray, move the sign or stop putting lunch on that shelf? I don't want to make a suspicious announcement about thieves when someone has already described a plausible mistake. I also don't want everyone to infer that a name label is decorative if there is a friendly sign nearby.

Move the sign so it identifies the shared-food area rather than the entire shelf. A tray could help if there is room. The present arrangement gives two conflicting signals: a name on the box and an invitation above everything. Fixing that is more useful than increasing the size of your name.

Her apology and replacement offer are relevant. You don't have to decide whether she was secretly careless or hungry to ask for a clearer fridge setup. Accepting the repair can close this incident while the layout still gets changed.

Don't solve an ambiguous sign by quietly moving all your lunches elsewhere unless that is genuinely more convenient for you. The next person may make the same mistake with somebody else's box. Describe the confusion to whoever can agree the shared-food area.
