Should I renew my son's maths tutoring when it clashes with the club he actually wants to attend?

Education category photographEducation

"Can the maths hour move? That's when they build the robot." My twelve-year-old had the robotics timetable open beside his latest test. He got 61 after getting 52 last month. I was looking at the nine extra marks; he was looking at another four Tuesdays he would miss.

We bought a block of four tutoring sessions at £32 each. The tutor says he is more willing to attempt questions now and recommends another block. My son says the tutor explains things well. He isn't asking to stop learning maths; he wants his one school club back. The tutor's only current slot is Tuesday, so moving the hour isn't an option yet.

My partner thinks we should keep going until his marks are steadier. I haven't spoken to his classroom teacher about what the mistakes actually show. On this paper he left two questions blank, but I don't know whether he ran out of time or didn't understand them.

The renewal message is sitting unanswered. I'd like to speak to the teacher before buying another block, but my partner hears a pause as giving up just when something may be helping. How do we decide what would justify another month, without making robotics a reward he can only earn through a test score?

Those two blank questions are worth bringing to the classroom teacher. If he can explain them untimed, the conversation about help may look different from one where he cannot start them at all. The mark alone leaves you choosing between two timetables without knowing what the tutoring needs to address.

He has given the tutor credit while asking for robotics back. That makes his request more specific than 'I don't want to do maths.' I'd acknowledge that distinction out loud. Otherwise he may feel he has to pretend the tutoring is useless to get anyone to consider its cost to him.
