Is it sensible to ask for a later bill date when I can pay by moving money from savings?

Money category photographMoney

The electricity payment is due on the 6th; my pay arrives on the 10th. Last month I moved $120 from savings, paid on time, then put the $120 back after payday. I have done the same little transfer three months running.

My monthly income covers the bills. It's this four-day gap that keeps making the account look short. My partner suggested asking the supplier whether the due date could move to the 12th. I felt embarrassed, as though the request would announce that I couldn't afford electricity.

I don't know whether they allow date changes or what would happen to the first bill if they did. I also don't want to move one payment into a new cluster of bills and create a different squeeze. Leaving the current system alone is possible; it just means the savings pot keeps doing a job I hadn't intended for it.

Would you make the call, build a permanent bill buffer, or keep transferring the money back and forth? What would you want confirmed before changing the date?

The three transfers suggest a recurring timing problem rather than a surprise electricity expense. Asking whether a different date is available gives you information; it doesn't commit you to changing anything or require a confession about the rest of your finances.
