How can I get hands-on practice when my partner does every click in our computer lesson?

Education category photographEducation

By the time I found the menu, my partner had made the chart and moved on. "This way we get finished," she said.

It's an adult beginners' class, with one computer between two of us. The worksheet is nearly complete, but I couldn't repeat the steps on my own. My partner has used spreadsheets at work and is being helpful in the way she knows: keeping us from falling behind.

I asked for a turn once. She watched while I searched, then took the mouse to show me. I want to ask for practice time without making her sit silently through every mistake. Should we agree on turns, or should I ask the tutor how the paired work is meant to run? My printed chart currently proves that someone at our desk knows what to do.

The completed chart and your opportunity to practise are different outcomes. Tell the tutor that you need a turn doing the sequence yourself, rather than only seeing it done. That is directly connected to the beginner class you enrolled in.

Your partner's experience gives her a reason to worry about the pace, not authority over every click. You could say, 'I need to finish one chart myself, even if it takes longer. Can you talk me through a step before taking the mouse?'
