Do we replace the club's Windows 10 laptop or try to keep it?

Technology category photographTechnology

Our treasurer tapped the laptop and said, ‘It still prints the membership cards. Why are we spending $420?’ That was the quote I had brought for a replacement, and it would use most of our equipment fund.

The old machine runs Windows 10, holds the membership spreadsheet and is also used for email. Its compatibility check says it cannot take the normal Windows 11 upgrade. I know ordinary Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025; extended security updates are a separate option whose eligibility and coverage we would need to check for this club's use. [Microsoft's support guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/updates-lifecycle/windows-10-support-has-ended-on-october-14-2025). Nobody has enrolled this laptop in an extended-updates programme.

One volunteer offered to install another operating system for free. He is capable, but he has not tested our card printer or the label layout. The treasurer is the person who does the printing, and a free change that makes her redo every label would not feel free to her.

I do not think ‘still switches on’ settles this. I also do not want to buy a laptop just because I have not investigated the alternatives. What would be enough evidence to choose between replacing it and keeping the hardware with a supported setup?

Ask the volunteer to demonstrate the actual card-printing job on a spare or temporary test setup, without overwriting the club's only working machine. A successful desktop login is a small part of the task. The treasurer needs to see her spreadsheet, printer and label spacing work together before agreeing to move.
