Do we move our Lisbon trip while one passport needs renewing?
TravelPeople, dialogue, bookings and prices are fictional; the cited document rules are real.
‘It doesn't expire until May,’ Owen says when his partner asks him to check his passport. Their Lisbon trip is booked for 6–10 November 2026. He is travelling from the UK on a full British citizen passport issued on 1 November 2016, with an expiry date of 1 May 2027.
Ruth reads the [UK government's Portugal entry guidance](https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/portugal/entry-requirements): the issue date must be less than ten years before arrival, and expiry must be at least three months after the planned departure from the Schengen area. On these dates, his passport fails the issue-date requirement even though it has enough time before expiry.
The immediate question is renewing it, not trying their luck at the airport. But Ruth's hotel cancellation deadline is tomorrow. Their fictional flight quote puts moving both tickets at £168 in total, while a replacement weekend would use the leave Ruth saved for her birthday. Owen wants to wait for a renewal appointment before changing anything; neither has confirmed what renewal service or timing is available.
What would you check and decide before the hotel deadline? If moving the trip becomes necessary, how should they share the extra cost without pretending the passport check was nobody's responsibility?
