Can I ask my neighbour to hide my doorway from his camera without asking him to remove it?
NeighboursMy neighbour turned his phone towards me and said, “See? It's only the landing.”
In the live camera view, I could see his doormat, our shared landing and the inside of my flat through my open front door. I had been standing there putting on my coat. He installed the doorbell camera after two parcels went missing from outside his flat in England. I understand why he wants to watch his deliveries; I hadn't understood how much of my doorway was in the picture.
I asked whether that section could be blanked out. He said he would check, then added, “If I hide half the landing, I lose the whole point.” Neither of us knows whether his particular camera can cover the parcel spot while obscuring my door. I also haven't asked whether it records audio.
The [ICO's home CCTV guidance](https://ico.org.uk/for-the-public/home-cctv-systems/) recommends discussing the view and asking about privacy filters. It says data protection rules apply when cameras capture beyond the owner's boundary, including communal areas. The page also says its guidance is under review.
I would be comfortable with a camera that cannot look into my flat. How should I make that request precise when the parcel spot and my doorway appear so close together on his screen?
